Frequently asked questions

What is the treatment approach?

Dr. Shakked has experience in multiple treatment approaches and will work with you to figure out what is most helpful for you. Initially, any immediate medical concerns will be addressed, then we will work together to identify your support system - whether they are professionals or people who are important in your life.

Almost everyone with an eating disorder needs frequent sessions with a registered dietitian. Other professionals you might need include a therapist and psychiatrist.
We will collaborate with each other as a team to ensure the best care.

How does this all work, anyway?

Dr. Shakked is a private physician who specializes in eating disorders (and other medical needs related to mental health). She will meet you and help you figure out a treatment plan according to your goals. It is like seeing a specialist in any other field - if you had a heart problem, you would see a cardiologist.

Why don't you take insurance?

In order to do the work that patients need, Dr. Shakked has decided to go back to a simpler model in which care occurs between the physician and patient. In this way, she can dedicate more time and attention to patients. This model allows her to care for you, without corporate or insurance interference.

You may be able to use your regular insurance for laboratory testing, imaging if needed, and may be able to continue most of your care with your regular physician. A superbill (formal receipt for medical services) can be provided and you may be able to recover some costs as a PPO out-of-network cost. Check with your FSA/HSA - they are likely to be able to chip in too.

What if I need labs or other studies?

Lab studies, when needed, will be ordered at Quest Laboratories. If your insurance covers laboratory services, check with them to see if the services are covered. If not, most of the laboratory studies ordered for eating disorders are reasonably priced.

What is not included?

Primary care services (immunizations, management of other medical problems, well-child checks, and treatment of acute illnesses), emergency services, and immediate access. You will need to keep your regular doctor - primary care docs are the best!

We operate as a transparent, cash-pay clinic. Please note that we are not a concierge practice. There is no "plan fee" or retainer. Instead, you only pay for the specific care you receive. Because this is not a concierge service, it does not include 24/7 on-call availability or after-hours medical services. For any after-hours needs or medical emergencies, patients must utilize urgent care or call 911.
